Dr David Codyre, Clinical Director Wellness Support Team - Outstanding Contribution to Health

Nomination: Dr. David Codyre is a distinguished psychiatrist with over three decades of exemplary service in New Zealand's community mental health sector. His career is marked by visionary leadership, advocacy, and ground-breaking initiatives that have significantly advanced mental health care and holistic wellbeing across the country.

Worthy of the Award: David’s contributions are profound and multifaceted. As the Clinical Director of the Wellness Support Team at Tāmaki Health, he has been instrumental in developing and implementing innovative programs aimed at integrating mental health support into primary care settings. Over the past 18 years, he has championed the development of primary mental health programs, advocating at regional and national levels for improved support and capacity building. His leadership in pioneering the integration of wellness support within GP clinics with the development of Health Coaching in a primary care setting has not only enhanced mental health services but has also elevated standards of care for patients with complex medical conditions.

David’s strategic vision and tireless efforts have yielded tangible results, as evidenced by the "Fit for the Future" evaluation conducted by Synergia in 2017.  This evaluation highlighted significant improvements in patient mental health and overall wellbeing following the implementation of his integrated care models. This evidence was the driver behind the national implementation of Integrated Primary Mental Health and Addictions (IPMHA) services in New Zealand following the 2019 Mental Health Budget. Resulting in a successful programme that has touched the lives of countless individuals, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to improving health outcomes and promoting holistic care approaches.

In addition to his role as Clinical Director, he serves as a Trustee for Safe Man, Safe Family and as Clinical Lead for mental health and addictions at Whakarongorau (NZ telehealth services). His dedication and impact on mental health have been acknowledged with prestigious awards, including the New Zealand Order of Merit, a testament to his significant influence and leadership in the field.
